Current research has revealed that, at present, there are more households in the United States with pets than with children.
According to a story by the National Association of Realtors, the US Census recently found that the number of families with children under the age of 18 living at home has declined steadily over the last few years.
As of 2022, only 40 percent of all American households had underage children living under their roofs. Reasons for this include overall declining birth rates and a large percentage of Baby Boomer households whose adult children have already moved out.
In stark contrast, pet ownership has been booming in the US over the last two decades. One recent survey by the American Pet Products Association estimated that 70 percent of American households now own at least one pet. An especially notable spike in rates of pet ownership occurred during the heyday of the COVID-19 pandemic, as more people adopted pets to combat increasing social isolation. According to the same survey, dogs and cats are the most common household pets for Americans.
