A seasonal pet merchandise program is a short, dated run of branded pet products built for one selling window: a holiday, a summer, a back to school push, or a single retail promotion. It is the lower risk way for a brand to enter the pet category, because the commitment ends when the season does, and a season that works becomes the argument for a year round line.

Why run a season rather than a full line?
A year round pet line is a real commitment: assortment planning, replenishment, shelf space that has to keep earning, and inventory that has to keep moving. For a brand that has never sold into the category, that is a lot to sign up for on a hypothesis.
A season is a bounded version of the same bet. One item or a small set, one window, one quantity, and a clear end date. If it sells, you have real numbers rather than an argument, and the second season is planned against evidence. If it does not, the exposure was always finite.
The category itself is not small. U.S. consumers spent $158 billion on pets in 2024, with $165 billion projected for 2026, according to the American Pet Products Association's industry data, and roughly 95 million U.S. households own a pet. A seasonal program is a way to test your brand's share of that without underwriting a permanent line.
Which seasons actually work?
The strongest windows are the ones where a pet product is already a plausible purchase rather than a novelty.
- Winter holidays. The largest gifting window, and pets are firmly inside it. Also the most crowded, so the item has to be distinctly yours rather than a generic seasonal object with a logo on it.
- Summer and outdoor. Collars, leashes, harnesses, travel bowls, and water gear all have a natural season. Strong fit for outdoor, beverage, and hospitality brands.
- Back to school and autumn. Quieter, less contested, and useful for brands whose customers shift routine in September.
- Event tied windows. A tour, a season opener, an anniversary, a product launch. The season is defined by your calendar rather than by the retail one, which usually means less competition for attention.
Consider running a second, quieter window rather than fighting for the busiest one. A summer collar program that sells steadily is a better foundation than a holiday item that had to compete with everything else on the shelf.
How far ahead does a seasonal program have to start?
Earlier than the season, by a wide margin, and this is the single most common reason seasonal programs fail to happen at all.
Standard production is 6 to 8 weeks, and custom plush can vary with complexity. That window covers production only and excludes shipping. Air ship runs about 5 to 7 days, air freight about 12 to 15 days, and ocean freight about 30 to 40 days. PrideBites ships via UPS and DHL.
In front of production sit mockup review and sample approval, and behind it sits your own receiving, photography, listing, and merchandising work. Counting all of it, a first seasonal run realistically needs three to four months from first conversation to product on the shelf. A holiday program is therefore a summer conversation, and a summer program is a late winter one.
Ocean freight is where seasonal plans most often break. It is the cheapest route and the slowest, and it only saves money if the calendar allows it. A program that starts late gets pushed onto air freight, which erodes the margin that made the season worth running.
How do you size a seasonal run?
Size it to sell through, not to look impressive. Leftover seasonal inventory is worse than leftover year round inventory, because the reason to buy it expires.
The floor is the minimum, and the rule that shapes planning is that MOQ is set per size and per design. Sizes cannot be mixed to reach it. Custom plush minimums can go down to 250 units.
For a seasonal program that has one specific consequence worth planning around. A sized product, such as apparel or collars, multiplies the commitment: three sizes means three minimums, and if the season ends with the wrong size mix left over, the write down lands on the smallest part of the run. A product with no size variants, such as a toy, a bandana, a bowl, or a plush, keeps the whole program on one minimum and one sell through curve. For a first season that is usually the right trade.
What should a first seasonal item be?
Choose something that reads as yours at a glance and does not need explaining on a shelf. Everything PrideBites makes is customizable to your colors, logo, and identity, across toys, collars and leashes, apparel, bowls, beds and blankets, bandanas, and plush.
Two practical filters. First, does the item still make sense the week after the season ends? An item that does can be discounted rather than destroyed. Second, can it be photographed well? Seasonal merchandise sells disproportionately on imagery, and some products photograph much better than others.
If the goal is to test the category rather than to maximize one season, a strong evergreen product in a seasonal colorway often outperforms an aggressively seasonal object, because it survives the window. If you are weighing an owned line against a lighter arrangement, the private label pet products guide covers how ownership of the run works.
What happens after the season?
Decide the exit before the entry. There are three sensible endings and each implies a different quantity.
- Sell through and stop. The cleanest. Size the run to end near zero and treat the data as the deliverable.
- Repeat next year. Keep the artwork and the specification; a re-order skips most of the front end and is far quicker than the first run.
- Graduate to year round. The seasonal item becomes the anchor of a permanent assortment, with variants added once you know what sold.
Products are safe for dogs and cats and Prop 65 compliant after safety testing, which matters if the program is going into a retail environment with its own compliance requirements. Settle that documentation during the first run rather than during the repeat.
Frequently asked questions
What is a seasonal pet merchandise program?
It is a limited, dated production run of branded pet products made for a specific selling window such as a holiday, a summer, or a promotional event. It gives a brand a bounded way to test the pet category before committing to a year round assortment.
When should we start a holiday pet merchandise program?
In summer. Standard production is 6 to 8 weeks and excludes shipping, and mockup approval, sampling, and your own merchandising work sit either side of it. Three to four months from first conversation to shelf is the realistic planning number.
What is the minimum order for a seasonal run?
Minimums are set per size and per design and cannot be met by mixing sizes. Custom plush minimums can go down to 250 units. A product without size variants keeps a seasonal program on a single minimum, which is usually the better structure for a first season.
What happens to unsold seasonal stock?
That depends on how tightly the item is tied to the season. An evergreen product in a seasonal colorway can be discounted or carried forward, while a strictly seasonal object usually cannot. Sizing the run to sell through, and choosing an item that survives the window, are the two decisions that prevent the problem.
Can we repeat the same program next year?
Yes. Once artwork and specifications are settled, a re-order skips most of the front end work, so a second season takes considerably less time and management effort than the first.
Planning a seasonal program
Start with a mockup and a date. Send your logo, the window you are aiming at, and a rough quantity, and you get a free custom mockup back, typically within about 48 hours, with no cost and no commitment. Working backwards from the date is what turns a seasonal idea into a program rather than a missed window.
