Wholesale Pet Products for Bookstores

Bookstores add wholesale pet products as a store-branded sideline: dog toys, bandanas, bowls and cat toys made in the shop's own colors and logo, sold beside the pet books and at the register. For an independent bookstore the product is not really about pets. It is a way to sell the store itself to the customers who already love it.

This guide is for the owner, buyer or sidelines manager deciding whether a branded pet line earns its shelf space.

Why pet products fit a bookstore

Most independent bookstores already depend on sidelines. Stationery, totes, mugs and store-branded apparel carry margin that books alone do not, and they give a loyal customer something to buy when they are not buying a book.

Pets are a natural extension of that shelf. Roughly 95 million U.S. households own a pet, and pets accounted for $158 billion of U.S. spending in 2024, with $165 billion projected for 2026 (APPA). A bookstore's regulars are a lot of dog and cat owners whether or not the store has ever sold to them as such.

There is also a cultural fit. Plenty of bookstores welcome dogs, some keep a shop cat, and where there is a store animal it tends to be the most photographed thing on the premises. A branded toy or bandana turns that affection into something a customer can take home.

What sells in a bookstore setting

The best performers are small, giftable and easy to merchandise on a table or near the counter.

  • Plush dog toys. The strongest single item. A custom plush in the shape of a book, a stack of books or the store mascot is a natural gift and a natural photo.
  • Cat toys. Plush catnip toys and catnip wand toys, so the line speaks to cat owners as well as dog owners rather than only one half of the shop.
  • Bandanas. One size, the best logo surface in the range and easy to display flat.
  • Bowls and placemats. Good for a home-and-gift table, and a laser-etched bowl reads as a keepsake rather than a supply.
  • Poop-bag holders. An easy add-on at the counter, with the store's logo seen on every walk.

Collars, leashes, harnesses and apparel involve a size decision for both the store and the shopper. They can work, but for a first order a bookstore is usually better served by one-size items.

Store-branded, author-branded or private label

There are three ways to put a name on the product, and they do different jobs.

Store-branded

The shop's name and logo on the product. This is the most common choice and the one that works as a souvenir for visitors and as a loyalty object for regulars.

Event and author tie-ins

A limited run tied to a signing, a children's story hour or a local author's book. If the character is the author's own, the rights question sits with the author and publisher, and the mechanics are covered in the guide to custom plush for authors.

Private label

A line that carries its own name rather than the store's, useful for a small chain or a store with a strong in-house imprint. Private label is available across the range.

How minimums work

The minimum order quantity is per size and per design, and sizes cannot be mixed to reach a minimum. That rule decides the shape of a first order for a single-location store, so it is worth planning around rather than discovering at quote time.

Custom plush can go down to 250 units for a design. Quantity price breaks apply at thresholds that vary by product. A store that wants several designs is usually better off starting with one strong design at the minimum and adding a second once the first has sold through.

Timeline and the holiday window

Production is six to eight weeks, custom plush can vary by complexity, and none of that includes shipping time. For most bookstores the fourth quarter is the season that matters, so work backwards from when the product needs to be on the floor, add transit, and add the design step in front of it.

The design step is free. A custom mockup typically comes back within about 48 hours with no cost and no commitment, and free samples are available through an account executive, so a buyer can judge the product in hand before committing shelf space.

Where to put it in the store

Placement decides whether a sideline sells. Three spots tend to work:

  • Beside the pet and animal books. The obvious cross-sell, and the shopper there has already told you they have an animal.
  • At the register. Bandanas, cat toys and bag holders are impulse items at a counter.
  • On the gift table. A plush toy next to a gift book is a complete present for a dog-owning friend.

If the store also runs a gift section with its own buyer, the merchandising logic for that channel is covered in the guide to wholesale pet products for gift shops.

Safety and sourcing

All products are safe for dogs and cats and are Proposition 65 compliant after safety testing. Manufacturing is in China and India, and shipping is by UPS and DHL.

Frequently asked questions

Is a pet line worth it for a single independent bookstore?

It can be, if the first order is shaped around the minimum. Because the minimum is per size and per design, one one-size item such as a plush toy or a bandana is a complete first order. Stores with several locations gain because one design covers every shop.

What should a bookstore order first?

One custom plush or one bandana in one design, carrying the store's name or mascot, merchandised beside the pet books and at the register. A single item done well tells you more about demand than four items spread thin, and it is easier to reorder.

Can we make a toy based on our shop cat or store mascot?

Yes. Products are made to your colors, your logo and your identity, and a custom plush can be designed around a mascot or a store animal. The free mockup is the quickest way to see whether the idea works before anything is produced.

How far ahead should we order for the holidays?

Production is six to eight weeks excluding shipping, and custom plush can take longer depending on complexity. Add transit time and the roughly 48-hour mockup step, then count backwards from the date the product needs to be on your floor.

Do we need any pet retail experience?

No. PrideBites handles design, production and fulfillment from brief to doorstep, and has worked with more than 500 brand partners. The store brings its brand and its customers; the pet product expertise comes with the order.
