Pet Merchandise for Sports Teams

Pet merchandise for sports teams is custom branded pet product made in team colors and marks: plush toys, bandanas, collars, leashes, jerseys and bowls, used either as a giveaway at a dog friendly game or as a retail line in the team store. The two uses look similar and buy completely differently, so the first decision is which one you are doing.

If you run promotions, merchandise or partnerships for a team, league or venue and you are planning a dog day, this is a guide to picking the item, sizing the order against a fixed game date, and deciding whether it belongs in a giveaway or on a shelf.

Why a dog day works as a promotion

A pet promotion reaches a bigger audience than most teams expect. Around 95 million U.S. households own a pet, and Americans spent $158 billion on pets in 2024 with $165 billion projected for 2026, according to the American Pet Products Association (americanpetproducts.org/industry-trends-and-stats).

The mechanic is unusual among promotional giveaways because the item leaves the venue and stays in use. A branded towel gets folded away. A branded dog toy gets carried around a neighborhood by an animal whose owner photographs it. Pet owners are highly social and fiercely loyal to brands that acknowledge their animals, and a team is a brand that fans already feel ownership of, so the two compound.

It is also a rare promotion that produces user generated content without asking for it. The fan does the posting because the subject is their dog in team colors.

Giveaway or retail: decide before you brief

Giveaway

Fixed quantity, fixed date, one design, no sizing if you can avoid it. The constraint is that everyone who qualifies must receive one, so the count is set by ticket policy rather than by demand. Bandanas and plush toys dominate here: they are size agnostic, they photograph well, and they carry team marks cleanly.

Retail

Variable quantity, no hard date, and sizing becomes worth the trouble because a customer chooses their own. Jerseys, hoodies, collars and leashes belong in this column. Retail also lets you carry several price points, which a giveaway cannot.

The two can share a design, and often should. A giveaway bandana that also sits on the team store shelf turns a one day promotion into a season long line.

Picking the item

  • Plush toys. The most brand surface for the least explanation, and they can be made in a team shape rather than a generic one. Custom plush timing varies with complexity, so brief these earliest.
  • Bandanas. Cheapest per unit to ship, effectively one size, and the single most reliable giveaway item.
  • Jerseys and apparel. The obvious fan item and the one that needs sizing. Strong in retail, awkward in a giveaway.
  • Collars and leashes. Year round use rather than game day use, which makes them a retail item that keeps the marks visible for months.
  • Bowls, blankets and travel bowls. Good perceived value for a premium tier or a season ticket holder gift.

All products are safe for dogs and cats, and Prop 65 compliant after safety testing. If you are working under a league licensing program, that compliance answer is usually the first thing the licensor asks for.

Quantities, and the rule that catches teams out

Minimum order quantity applies per size and per design, and sizes cannot be mixed to reach a minimum. A giveaway of 5,000 bandanas is one design at one size, which is straightforward. A retail jersey line in four sizes is four minimums, which is a different budget conversation.

Two practical consequences:

  • Start size agnostic, add sizing later. Run the first dog day on a bandana or a toy, see the attendance and the sell through, then decide whether an apparel line is worth four minimums.
  • Order for the season, not the game. If the item works in the team store as well as at the gate, a single larger run covers both and earns a volume break, where two separate small runs earn neither.

Private label is available if the item should carry only team marks with no reference to us.

Working backwards from a fixed game date

A game date does not move, which makes this the most timing sensitive kind of pet merchandise project we see. Standard production is 6 to 8 weeks, and custom plush can vary with complexity. That is production only and excludes shipping. Freight runs at roughly 5 to 7 days by air ship, 12 to 15 days by air freight, and 30 to 40 days by ocean freight, via UPS and DHL.

  • Brief and mockup. We send a free custom mockup, typically within about 48 hours, with no cost and no commitment.
  • Marks approval. This is the step that overruns. Team and league mark approvals sit outside the production timeline and need their own window.
  • Production. 6 to 8 weeks from approved artwork.
  • Freight and delivery to the venue. Add transit, and confirm who receives and stores several pallets before the date.

Read that as a minimum. A promotion briefed eight weeks out has no room for a marks revision, and marks revisions are normal. Free samples are available through an account executive if you need a physical unit for a licensor sign off.

Frequently asked questions

What pet items work best for a stadium giveaway?

Size agnostic items: bandanas and plush toys first, then bowls and blankets for a premium tier. Apparel and collars need sizing, which is manageable in a team store and difficult at a gate where every qualifying attendee must receive the same thing.

How many units do I need?

For a giveaway, the count comes from your ticket policy rather than from demand. Minimums apply per size and per design, so one design in one size is the cheapest structure. For retail, expect a separate minimum for each size you carry.

How far ahead should we brief a dog day?

Allow 6 to 8 weeks of production plus freight, and add a separate window for team or league mark approvals before production can start. Briefing four months ahead of a fixed game date is comfortable. Two months is not.

Do we need pet industry experience to run one?

No. The service is turnkey from brief to doorstep: you bring the marks and the promotion, and we handle design, production and fulfillment. Most organizations running pet promotions have never sold a pet product before.
