40 New “Hot Paws” Signs Installed around City of Reno for Pet Safety

As temperatures continue to rise over the summer months, pet owners need to be aware of the significant risk that hot surfaces pose to pets’ paws. In particular, surfaces like sand, asphalt, and concrete become extremely hot after extended sun exposure and are thus dangerous for dogs and cats to walk on.

To remind pet owners of these risks, the City of Reno has begun installing “Hot Paws” signs along its riverfront and around certain city parks, particularly those with paved paths. The city is aiming to put up around 40 of these signs all in all, in the hope that they will help remind owners to check the temperature of particular surfaces before letting their dogs walk on them.

The city designed and manufactured the “Hot Paws” signs at the suggestion of Reno resident Dana Delicino, who contacted Mayor Hillary Schieve earlier this year and asked if it would be possible to install them. Installation officially began the week of July 8, 2024. The signs feature Boston, Reno Fire Department’s resident arson dog.

Walking Your Dog Safely During the Summer

Sweltering summer temperatures may make walking your dog daily a little more challenging than usual, but with some additional safety measures in place, you and your four-legged companion can still enjoy time outdoors.

To start with, aim to walk your dog at cooler hours of the day, such as in the evening or early morning. Keep them by your side at all times so they don’t accidentally walk onto a potentially dangerous surface before you’ve had the chance to check it first. Sturdy leashes, custom dog collars, Martingale collars, or harnesses are good investments to make at this time and will serve you well all year round.
